WTTC Working with Government

A Platform for Government Engagement in Travel & Tourism

A key part of our mission is to partner with governments to maximise the inclusive and sustainable growth potential of the Travel & Tourism sector.

As the trusted authority in Travel & Tourism, WTTC provides insights to inform effective policy making and platforms for governments to engage with the private sector to jointly shape the future of Travel & tourism and ensure its long-term competitiveness and sustainability.

It is our goal to ensure that Travel & Tourism remains a strong sector, for government, businesses and the local communities alike. We’re glad to share our research and events in support of that objective as well as collaborating with individual governments to address specific issues for the improvement of our sector overall.

How we can support governments:

Data on the impact of Travel & Tourism

WTTC continues to produce robust research which can inform public sector decision-making through data, knowledge sharing, and thought-leadership on key concerns for our sector.

Economic Impact Research:

We produce reports on the economic and employment impact of Travel & Tourism for 185 countries/economies and 26 geographic or economic regions in the world. These reports, in conjunction with Oxford Economics, are a vital tool in helping us to equip public and private sector bodies with hard evidence of the huge value Travel & Tourism brings to the economy, so that their policymaking and investment decisions support our sector.

All of these reports can be found on the WTTC Research Hub.

Environmental and Social Reporting:

We have expanded our reporting on the sector’s impact to include environmental and social footprints across a range of indicators, including GHG, pollutants, energy sources, water use, material input, the age, wage and gender profile of employment, etc. It includes direct and supply chain impacts (for GHG, scopes 1, 2 and 3), and is tracked across the sub-sectors that make up Travel & Tourism. This data exists for 185 countries, with initial years including 2010, 2019, 2020, 2021. The results are also mapped against the relevant Sustainable Development Goals which makes them a great tool to track Travel & Tourism’s progress against these global objectives.

The full range of data from our Environmental and Social Reporting at country, regional, and global level can be accessed via our website here.

We are happy to work with governments to provide more detailed, tailored data and insights to inform specific policy needs or decision-making.

Research and policy guidance

As the authority on Travel & Tourism, WTTC is dedicated to exploring solutions to improve Travel & Tourism, which requires the collaboration of the public and private sector.

To support this, we produce a range of analysis in addition to the research on the economic, environmental, and social impact of our sector. Many of our reports include recommendations for governments alongside learnings and case studies for the private sector.

Recent reports which may be of particular interest to governments include:

Nature positive:

  • The leading sustainability report and road map for Travel & Tourism to become Guardians of Nature and get Nature Positive by 2030, endorsed by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD)
  • The Nature Positive Vision for Travel & Tourism aspires to a future in which the industry has adopted a Nature Positive approach by 2030. It encourages Travel & Tourism to support and inspire governments, businesses, and society to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework and help transform humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Staff shortages

  • This report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with Oxford Economics, analyses the issue of labour scarcity in several key Travel & Tourism markets and makes a number of recommendations on how these can be addressed for the Travel & Tourism sector.

JLL Destination 2030

  • This project assesses global cities' tourism readiness and analyses what makes a city ready for sustainable Travel & Tourism growth, with 63 cities assessed and 75 indicators reviewed. It defines a Framework for city typologies and showcases the interconnectedness of the many factors required to enhance a city’s tourism readiness.

We have also worked with a number of destinations to produce customised in-depth reports based on our unique data and ability to bring in new insights and guidance.

Solutions

Hotel Sustainability Basics

For our Hotel Sustainability Basics initiative, WTTC together with key industry players has defined 12 fundamental sustainability criteria to raise the floor of sustainability in the hospitality industry and leave no one behind. We encourage governments to support the implementation of the Hotel Sustainability Basics verification for accommodation providers in their destinations.
