Accelerating Climate Action: Unpacking the second edition of A Net Zero Roadmap for Travel & Tourism

The webinar took a deep dive into the second edition of WTTC's Net Zero Roadmap for Travel & Tourism.

Launched at COP29 in partnership with the State Tourism Authority of Azerbaijan, this updated and comprehensive guide provides a blueprint for the sector to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Titled Decarbonising Travel: How Do We Get There?, the session tackled tough questions around the tactics, challenges, and payoffs of decarbonisation. Special attention was given to the roles of Amadeus and The Travel Corporation in driving change.

The webinar explored ways to accelerate climate action, and drive greater alignment, transparency, and consistency in emission monitoring across Travel & Tourism businesses.

Whether you work in accommodation, cruise, aviation, or travel planning—or simply have a passion for sustainable travel—this webinar offered valuable insights on the path to a more sustainable future for the industry.

Webinar Top 5 Learnings

  1. Emissions are rising again post-pandemic. Despite improvements in carbon intensity, recovery-driven growth is increasing emissions, requiring stronger and more urgent action.
  2. Increased momentum in climate target setting, but action must follow. While over 50% of T&T businesses have a public climate target, tangible action towards significant emission reduction remains low.
  3. Infrastructure and finance are major barriers. Budget constraints, regulatory fragmentation, and lack of financing are slowing decarbonisation efforts, particularly for SMEs.
  4. Collaboration across industries is essential. Travel & Tourism’s interconnected supply chain requires cross-industry partnerships to drive emissions reductions.
  5. The time for action is now. The sector must move beyond planning. It is time to implement net zero strategies and scale up investments in decarbonisation solutions.
